Writer's Block

I know I touched on this subject before but I think that it’s time to talk about it again. Writer’s Block and how do you get passed it. I think it was Joe Konrath that said he never gets Writer’s Block. When I get stuck, I do three things to get passed it.

1. I give my main character a new problem to solve.
2. I put my mc in danger.
3. Last, I re-read what I’ve written and most of the time it works.

What do you do to get passed Writer’s Block? Do you even get Writer’s Block?

I have to say I do become blocked but it isn't so much writer's block as TIME blocked. I can only do so much when getting ready for work, waiting for the load of laundry to finish washing, etcetc. I so believe if given an entire day to do nothing but write, and NOT feel guilty about doing so, I could accomplish a lot. Now to answer your question (after all that rant!) I usually read and edit and it gets me going again.

I too find rereading will get the juices flowing again.

#1 and 2 are great ideas. If the soup is stale, stir it. I wouldn't say I get writer's block, but I do feel stale at times.

When this happens, I move away from the keyboard and come back tomorrow. But...but...I do write at least 500 words that day.

I never let my brain quit, even when it wants to.

Hey Steve there are times you have to let your brain quit. But throw a wrench into the mix and see what happens. It's always fun to watch your characters run for cover.

What works best for me is actually stepping away from the manuscript for a while and working on something completely new (which I have been doing recently.)

I've found that while I'm working on something different, my mind throws up ideas and answers for the piece I'm stuck on.

Emailing a trusty crit partner is always worthwhile too.

I can't walk away. I just have to work through it. A CP is a great idea also.

I don't really think I ever get writer's block. There are times where I don't feel like writing, or struggle to get ideas down onto paper, but my minds always ticking over with some scene or other, even if it's nothing to do with my WIP, or familiar characters.

I do get stuck. I'm utterly stuck on 'Awakening' at 35,000 words (I think). I know what happens next, just not how to write it or link it into the section following. I am doing well on a new novella (or was since now I have exams looming).

I move past writer's block by being with other writers.

(BTW, I think you mean "past" instead of "passed.")

Good blog.
